From Karachi to Kearney

For some of the readers Karachi would sound unfamiliar and for many Kearney would be more unfamiliar and for some both the cities would be unfamiliar. So, I am going to introduce both the cities in a few words and provide a link for more information.

There are two reasons for connecting these cities with a dot on the world map. The first reason is that both the cities start with the same letter, but you may say that there are a number of cities that start with the same letter. Well, for me both the reasons mingle in one word, I have lived in both the cities. Karachi is the city, where I was born, raised, educated, married and lived for nearly half a century and has tons of memories associated with, while Kearney is the city where I lived and worked for one year.

I was born in Karachi in 1947, just a few months after this city became the capital of the newly created country–Pakistan within the Indian sub-continent in Asia, on the basis of religion, to provide an independent country for the Muslims of India who were in the minority and deprived of many rights and privileges by the dominant Hindu population. Just after Pakistan was created as an independent Muslim country on 14th of August, millions of Muslims started migrating to various cities from all over India, using all possible means of transportation. This migration is one of the biggest migration of the century and also one of the biggest mass slaughter.

I had my early childhood and early education (elementary) and my undergraduate education in Karachi. I started my career, started my family life, and lived for almost half century in Karachi. While I worked with an US based company in many African countries for more than eight years, I still maintained my permanent residence in Karachi, and was a frequent traveler, using the Karachi International Airport as my port of entry.

I had the best four years as a student of Dawood College of Engineering and Technology in Karachi, from where I graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronic Technology, and I want to share a picture of my alma mater.

Kearney, one of the important city of Nebraska, where I lived for about one year from July 2017 to June 2018. I worked in the newly constructed campus of Central Community College, which had the main campus in Grand Island, another important city of Nebraska, about 200 miles from Omaha, the capital of Nebraska. Kearney has a population of 35,000 and has an area of about 13 miles, as far as the city limit is concerned. I was the only IT instructor in that campus, and lived about 3 miles from the campus. The weather of Nebraska had both the extremes. In winter we had temperature dropping to -22 degrees Fahrenheit, with snow, blizzards and rain for many days. While in summer the temperature crossed 100 degrees for many weeks.

Although, my stay in Kearney or the Central Community College’s campus was only for 1 year, it was memorable in many ways. The staff and the local population were very friendly and I felt really at home, as if I had been there from quite some time. As, the city was very small compared to Atlanta, everything was within 5-7 miles or minutes from my house. The library was only ten minutes walk from my apartment. I would like to share the view of the campus.
